The Gebelein Man is the most well-known of the six naturally mummified bodies discovered in graves near Gebelein (now called Naga el-Gherira), Egypt. The Gebelein Man was the first uncovered at the site in 1896 and since 1901, the body has been displayed at the British Museum. The mummy was nicknamed Ginger because of its visibly red hair.

One of the key attractions in the Early Egypt gallery (Gallery 64) at the British Museum is the body of a man who was buried in about 3500 BC at the site of Gebelein in Upper Egypt. Known as Gebelein Man, he was wrapped in linen and matting, and was placed in a crouched position in a shallow grave.

All seven of the Gebelein mummies were examined for tattoos, but only Gebelein Man A and Gebelein Woman were found inked. It's impossible to know what the significance of the tattoos could be, but given how important the motifs themselves seem to have been, it's possible the tattoos indicate some sort of status, especially as they were placed in highly visible locations on the body.

2013-02-06 · The Gebelein Man is currently on exhibit at the British Museum, the grave goods displayed with him are from similar predynastic burials since the objects that accompanied him at his original burial site are unknown. Based on this burial though, archaeologists can infer much of how predynastic cultures viewed the world, the dead, and the afterlife.
